Oppose SB 181 - Keep Library Worker Civil Service Protections!
SB 181 is a proposed constitutional amendment that would strip ALL protection from current Louisiana civil service employees. The bill does two things - it gives the governor control over a majority of members of the civil service commission, and it allows for the REMOVAL of any and all unclassified positions at any time.
Make no mistake - the goal of this bill is to take away all job protection for civil service employees, and instead make them at-will, subject to termination at ANY time for ANY reason. The bill's author, Senator Jay Morris (R-Monroe), has said, “I could probably see us doing without civil service altogether.”
Public librarians are classified civil service employees. If this bill passes, they could lose their jobs for opposing book banning efforts at their institutions, effectively silencing any dissent.
