Protect The Tacoma Tideflats

With the City of Tacoma Interim Regulations final reading coming up May 19th, we are engaging our leaders who know that the fossil fuel industry continues to target Tacoma for dangerous new oil and gas projects.

The Tideflats Interim Regulations are a critical safeguard that protects our communities and our environment by pausing new fossil fuel development in Tacoma.

Since 2017, the existing regulations have kept polluting industry at bay, but fossil fuel interests are constantly trying to find ways to work around these regulations. In the last year, we’ve seen a growing interest from fossil fuel companies who want to set up shop in Tacoma, including a new oil transfer facility and a chemical plant interested in storing huge amounts of fossil fuels.

By preventing these dangerous proposals from coming to fruition, the current regulations are working. However, under the current regulations, these same kinds of projects could easily be approved for existing facilities with little-to-no additional oversight or protections. This is why the regulations need to be amended to pause the growth of existing facilities like Seaport Sound and US. Oil.

To protect the health and safety of Tacoma, City Council needs to hear from you. The final reading is set for May 19, and due to COVID-19 the City is encouraging written comment. Comments can be submitted to the City Clerk's Office via email at cityclerk@cityoftacoma.org by 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19th.

Presently, there will be no chance for spoken comment, unless an amendment is proposed, which makes these letters all the more important.

We need your voice to ask Tacoma City Council to pass stronger regulations that safeguard the health and wellbeing of our communities and environment.
