What is Fast Track/Trade Promotion Authority?

A bill that aims to “fast track” all trade deals for the next four years, including the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP). It weakens the democratic process by limiting debate in Congress and prohibiting amendments. It would allow only a yea or nay vote on the entire TPP deal including changes to many U.S. laws. Congress only uses fast track when they know they don’t have the support to get trade agreements passed in the normal way.

What is the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP)?

TPP is being called the trade deal to end all trade deals. Much bigger than NAFTA and involving countries with worse records on worker and human rights, TPP is the prime example of corporations are rewriting the rules of the global economy, leaving out concerns of all others. Only 5 of the 29 draft chapters are about trade; the rest are about corporate protection. Some of these things include restrictions on unionization, limitations of governments’ ability to regulate financial institutions, environmental protections, consumer protections including drug prices, and even government procurement programs like Buy American..
