School Is for Kids, Not for Profits: NO to HB 520

Email your legislators today to tell them VOTE NO on HB 520!

This week, the Kentucky state House Education Committee is poised to hear House Bill 520, which would allow charter schools in Kentucky.  We are strongly opposed to HB 520 because the bill . . .

  • Allows for-profit charter schools
  • Allows parents to vote to convert an existing school into a charter school without buy-in from staff or approval of local school boards
  • Allows the Kentucky Board of Education to require a local school board to authorize charter schools that the board has found not to be appropriate
  • Allows for 100% Virtual Charter Schools that have been a complete disaster in other states
  • Allows for an UNLIMITED number of charter schools without even a pilot period
  • Gives charter schools unfair federal Title 1 funding advantages over existing public schools
  • Does not include impact on existing schools as a factor to be considered when authorizing or reauthorizing charter schools
  • Does not include many of the rigorous public accountability and democratic oversight provisions found in Senate bills such as SB 70
  • Does not allow parents to elect their own representatives on charter boards
  • Prohibits educators at charter schools from serving on charter boards at their schools

And these are just some of the problems with House Bill 520.

Please take action now to protect Kentucky students from corporate interests that want to profit from public education funding.  Click through to the right to send your legislators an email telling them to VOTE NO on HB 520!
