Bring a Sanctuary Schools Policy to SD43

Every child has the right to education regardless of their immigration status

Canada is a signatory to the UN Convention Rights of the Child which declares that every child has the right to education and the BC School Act mandates the provision of free education to every school age student if they and their guardian are “ordinarily resident” in BC.

The BC School Trustees Association near-unanimously passed a motion committing support to Boards of Education to remove barriers to registration for students with precarious or no immigration status in their Districts. From New Westminster to the Okanagan, school districts are joining the movement. This election, join Sanctuary Health, Tri-Cities Amnesty International, SD43 graduates and educators in telling SD43 School Trustee candidates that implementing a Sanctuary Schools policy is an election priority!

A family fleeing their home country seeking safety for their children. A single mother leaves an abusive partner who has been promising to sponsor her. A worker in BC with their family thanks to a work permit tied to their employer is laid off due to COVID-19. Children in these families have the right to education and the Coquitlam School District needs a policy to honour that right. Now is our opportunity to make it happen!
