State Lawmakers: No Targeted Tax on Teachers

Legislative leaders from both parties have been meeting to craft what they refer to as a "compromise" alternative to the toxic and damaging state budget recently vetoed by the governor. One of its most unfair provisions — a secret tax on teachers — remains under consideration, despite nearly two weeks of public denouncement by educators, parents and student advocates across the state.

The scheme originally sought to hike pension contributions for public school teachers and administrators — but divert the funds away from their retirement security.

Lawmakers need to know there are real consequences for students and their schools — and the quality of life for all our state's residents — for unfairly singling out their teachers. They must recognize better choices for balancing the budget than an unfair and unjust occupational tax on those who work hard to educate and prepare Connecticut's future generations.
