Stop the Child Nutrition Act Block Grants

Preserve Meals for Hungry Kids
On May 18, 2016, the House Education and Workforce Committee voted out of committee the “Improving Child Nutrition and Education Act of 2016” (H.R. 5003). Of the many harmful provisions in H.R. 5003, instituting block grants would be the most damaging. A block grant is a capped amount of funds granted by the federal government to a state with only general provisions as to how it should be spent. That means states could limit eligibility and scope of services--reducing both the number of kids who get meals and the number of meals they get.
