Stop The Chinatown Mega Jail

Stop the Chinatown Mega Jail

NYC is about to build the TALLEST jail in the world at a cost of $2.3 Billion in the heart of Manhattan's Chinatown, which already has 3 jails (Manhattan Detention Center, the Tombs, and the Metropolitan Correction Center).

On Sunday, March 20, 2000+ New Yorkers took to the streets to show our strength in numbers and tell the city, "NO NEW JAILS." We have the City's attention, but we need to HOLD their attention by continuing to demand they listen to us.

Using billions in public funds to further mass incarceration is not the answer. We are calling on Mayor Eric Adams to Invest in PEOPLE and to stop building new jails, which he promised on the campaign trail. We need alternatives to the $8.3 billion borough jail plan that invests in education, pubic spaces, health care, and more.

The cost of housing one inmate in NYC is now $556,539 per person per year. That's $1,525 per person, every day in taxpayer dollars. Money that could go to resources for affordable housing and health services that would address long standing problems in communities all over New York City.

The impact of this 5-7 year demolition/construction in Chinatown will be devastating. The proposed jail will use both Centre Street and Baxter Streets for construction, an already densely populated area with senior housing, public green space, and small businesses in the immediate area. Chinatown is still recovering from the economic disaster from COVID-19,  the resulting xenophobia, and the increase in crime.

We need your help to tell the City of New York that this is irresponsible, wasteful government spending and is not the right way to spend taxpayer dollars.
