Stop the Foggy Bottom Evictions (AGAIN)
After several encampments in Foggy Bottom were evicted in May, a number of evicted residents moved to another park in Foggy Bottom. This simple triangle park boasts a critical safety feature during the extreme heat we’ve been facing this summer– a vent from the metro with good, consistent cooler air flow. As shelters are at-capacity and cooling centers are closing left and right, this vent is a vital reprieve from the oppressive humidity and scorching heat blasting the district over the summer. However, even though residents just moved there after being evicted from another encampment, DC government is already planning on evicting them again on July 30th. It is well-documented that repeated encampment evictions only serve to displace people; resulting in decreased stability, eroded connections with service providers and support, and the destruction of basic survival supplies. Not to mention, these policies of displacement and criminalization are expensive, diverting critical funds away from actual solutions to homelessness such as housing and other social services. It is time for DC to stop criminalizing homelessness and basic survival, cancel these evictions and stop the sweeps!
