Stop the I-78 Turnpike Expansion! Fund NJ Transit!

Bumper-to-bumper traffic jam coming off the Turnpike at the Holland Tunnel

The Murphy Administration plans to spend $4.7 $10.7 billion to widen the I-78 Turnpike Extension. This outdated plan out of the playbook of Robert Moses will do nothing but harm the climate and the environmental justice communities of Newark, Jersey City, and Hudson County, bringing more pollution, more congestion, and waste billions to only bottleneck traffic at the Holland Tunnel. After promising to simply not further burden communities that have already historically born the brunt of industrial pollution, the Murphy administration plans to do the exact opposite.

Meanwhile, NJ Transit has a nearly $1 billion annual operating deficit and unfunded plans to expand transit service, from light rail expansions around the state including the long-awaited Bergen County extension to track electrification and more frequent and reliable bus service. Worse, they are planning to increase all NJ Transit fares by 15% with annual 3% increases thereafter. Yet the fare increases will not fix NJ Transit’s underlying operational or financial problems.

Spending $10.7 billion on the unneeded, unwanted and disastrous Turnpike expansion in Hudson and Essex Counties will worsen traffic, increase pollution, and make travel more dangerous. Instead, NJ should repurpose that money to fund and invest in more sustainable and more efficient public transit and Vision Zero programs make our roads safe to travel pollution-free when walking and biking for short trips.
