Straub/Hawaii Pacific Health: Patient Care and Nurses Over Profits Now!
Most Hawaii residents are probably familiar with Hawaii Pacific Health (HPH), one of the largest healthcare providers in Hawaii. However, most residents probably aren’t aware of how dire the situation has become for Nurses at Straub Medical Center, an HPH hospital. Nurse staffing shortages at Straub are driving unsafe conditions for both patients and nurses, and those that advocate for patient safety are being ignored by a hospital administration that seems determined to turn a blind eye to the worsening situation. Nurses at Straub report regularly working 12 hour shifts with no meals or breaks. Meanwhile, the administration continues to pack the hospital over capacity, pushing an already overburdened and understaffed nursing team to their breaking point.
In recent contract negotiations, nurses have been attempting to address these patient safety concerns. They have advocated for scheduling competent nurses to cover their patients while they take breaks, but HPH has refused to accept this common sense solution, instead choosing profit over patient safety. Sign this petition to tell HPH to prioritize patient care and take care of nurses, the people who keep our families and communities safe every day.
