Pass Immediate Hurricane Relief and Make Polluters Pay
Congress needs to provide immediate relief to hurricane-affected communities and then hold fossil fuel companies accountable for the damage they've done.
In the wake of Hurricane Helene's devastating impact and with Hurricane Milton looming, we're calling on Congress to take swift, decisive action. Our demands are clear:
- Congress must immediately reconvene in Washington, DC to pass crucial emergency relief for hurricane-affected communities.
- We know that this won't be the last climate disaster. After passing a much-needed aid package, Congress should pass the Polluters Pay Climate Fund Act, establishing a $1 trillion fund financed by the fossil fuel industry.
This two-fold approach addresses both immediate disaster needs and long-term climate accountability. It ensures that Big Oil bears the cost of the climate crisis they've fueled, rather than taxpayers. By holding polluters responsible, we can better prepare for and mitigate future climate-related disasters while providing essential support to communities already affected.
The Polluters Pay Climate Fund will be used to address the impacts of climate change through various ways, including:
Rebuilding and upgrading infrastructure
Cleaning up pollution impacts in frontline communities
Providing climate-related disaster assistance, including at least $15 billion to FEMA
40% of the Fund is set aside for investments benefiting environmental justice communities
