Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a "program of last resort" that provides basic financial assistance to seniors and people with disabilities who typically have no other income. The current benefit is 74% of the poverty line and to qualify, single recipients must not hold assets above $2,000-- a figure that has not been updated since 1989. This prevents SSI recipients from saving for an emergency, buying a reliable vehicle, or paying first/last/security to move between rentals, even as their disabilities lead to changing needs in housing.
