Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya is the lead physician of the Chicago-based nonprofit MedGlobal and was working with them to direct medical care at the bombarded Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza.

Israel abducted Dr. Safiya on Dec. 27, 2024.

He is being held in an Israeli military prison with a long history of torture and abuse. No one has heard from Dr. Safiya, and no one has been allowed to see him.

Some members of Congress have started demanding U.S. action to free Dr. Safiya, but in this urgent scenario, we need more to speak up NOW and Biden to take action.

Dr. Safiya has suffered immensely just to provide medical and humanitarian care for Palestinians in Gaza. In October, his 15-year-old son was killed in an Israeli drone strike.¹ In November, another MedGlobal doctor at the hospital with Dr. Safiya was arrested and held in brutal conditions for a month until he was released without explanation.  

And yet, here is what Dr. Safiya said in December, less than a week before he disappeared into Israeli custody:

“We will leave when the last Palestinian leaves the northern Gaza Strip. We will stay and serve those who are here. This is a humanitarian mission, and our message to the world is that we deliver humanitarian care and should not be obstructed. We committed ourselves to providing for those in need, and we will fulfill our oath as doctors here at Kamal Adwan Hospital.”²

Every day Biden stays inactive, and Congress does not loudly demand Dr. Safiya be returned. It is a day that Dr. Safiya’s life, safety, and well-being continue to be put at dire risk.
