TAKE ACTION: Tell San José City Council to pass an Affordable Housing Siting Policy benefiting all communities!

We need you to send a message to the San José City Council by Tuesday, December 6, 2022, urging them to vote for building affordable housing throughout San José. The Affordable Housing Siting Policy determines where affordable housing projects will be financed and built. Last year, the City Council used divisive labels and statistics to reduce affordable housing projects in historically-redlined communities. Now, we have a huge opportunity to shift this direction. The Housing Department Staff recently proposed major changes to the Policy, and here’s what we like:

  • It increases affordable housing funds to historically-redlined communities, now called “Continued Investment Areas.”
  • It both funds and incentivizes affordable housing in historically exclusive communities, now known as “Affordable Housing Expansion Areas.”
  • It locates affordable housing sites throughout the entire City – removing crime and poverty statistics as a basis for building affordable housing.
  • It uses new, inclusive language – abandoning racially and class-motivated divisive categories.
SV@Home is a member of the Race Equity Action Leadership (REAL) Coalition, a community of nonprofit leaders and allies that use their positional power to advocate for a more racially-just and equitable society. Along with the Si Se Puede Collective and the Alum Rock Urban Village Advocates, the REAL Coalition have been working together for the past several months to ensure that the San José Affordable Housing Siting Policy centers equity. More about the Affordable Housing Siting Policy can be found here.

We’re dedicated to reversing San José’s racially-biased redlining legacy policies, while dismantling the segregation and discrimination residents of color have had to endure for generations.

Thank you for taking action to create a more equitable San José. We just need a few pieces of information to connect you with your San José Councilmembers.
