Take Action: the Green Party should oppose genocide & express support for South Africa's submission to the ICJ
Take a minute to send a letter to Green Party leader May, MP Mike Morrice & Shadow Foreign Affairs critic Pedneault.
To preempt any Canadian sabotage efforts, the Green Party of Canada should express its support for South Africa’s request to the International Court of Justice.
On Friday , December 29, 2023, the South African government requested the International Court of Justice (ICJ) make an urgent order declaring Israel in breach of its obligations under the 1948 Genocide Convention. This important effort to curtail the apartheid state’s horrors in Gaza must be supported.
Unfortunately the Trudeau government is more likely to undermine, than support, South Africa’s effort. Six months ago Ottawa asked the ICJ to reject a UN General Assembly resolution calling for an advisory opinion on the legal consequences that arise for states from Israel’s occupation. In 2020, Ottawa opposed an International Criminal Court investigation of Israel’s war crimes.
To preempt any Canadian sabotage efforts, the Green Party should express its support for South Africa’s request. In 2022, Canada intervened to support the ICJ investigating Russia for genocide. Today the the Green should demand Canada add its voice to South Africa’s bid to curtail Israel’s horrors in Gaza.
