Teachers Over Fossil Fuels - The CTA Must Take A Stand For Divestment!

As CTA members/teachers, you may know this already, but currently, CalSTRS is investing over $6 billion into the fossil fuel industry.
They are further contributing to the climate crisis that is affecting everyone, especially young people of color. Most oil and gas companies are located in low-income communities of color, causing students in these communities to suffer severe health effects in addition to the challenges they face regarding academic success. Knowing all this, as California burns, the hard-earned money of many teachers is still being invested in this climate catastrophe. Also, teachers' money is specifically being invested in pipelines that violate Indigenous rights, such at DAPL and Line 3. In addition, CalSTRS is funding the construction of the longest heated oil pipeline in the world, the East Africa Crude Oil Pipeline, which is leading to murder and mass displacement.
Being a teacher means investing. your effort into supporting the next generation, not investing in destroying it's health, equality and future.
There are numerous studies that show that divesting from fossil fuels will not harm the finances of the pension fund, and if anything, it will benefit them.
Generations to come are being forcibly placed into a deep hole of climate chaos that they may not be able to dig themselves out of. We have the power right now to make a significant impact and truly support climate justice. Your students understand the great influence you have as a member of the CTA, in moving CalSTRS towards divestment, and investing in our communities instead of our destruction.
Climate issues are not just environmental issues. They are social and mental health issues too, and they are abundant in today’s youth! Please, use your position and power to fight for a healthy and equitable world for your students' futures!
