Tell Augusta: No Cuts to General Assistance!

Send a message to your legislators today: hands off housing support in General Assistance (GA)!

Safe shelter should never be on the chopping block, definitely not to protect tax breaks for the wealthy and definitely not during a statewide housing emergency.

GA is a statewide program of last resort for Mainers who have exhausted all other options to afford food, medicine, rent, heat, electricity, or other basic needs. It is often the last hope before someone ends up homeless.

Yet, in the midst of a housing emergency, Gov. Mills and Republicans in the legislature are proposing cuts to housing support under General Assistance. According to Maine Housing, this cut could cause around 1,800 people across Maine to lose rent support and their home. We need our leaders to stay strong in support of General Assistance and reject cuts that will only make the housing crisis worse for our communities. They need to hear from us!

We are asking Maine people who understand and care about protecting GA to reach out to your legislators TODAY with the message: hands off GA! You can find more information in our fact sheet, but the most powerful thing is to make the message your own - share your housing story, your experience with GA, or your support for a housing response that MEETS THIS MOMENT and keeps our communities safe, healthy, and resilient.

We've been here before, and with your help, we believe we can protect GA for all again.

THANK YOU for taking quick action to protect this vital program!
