Tell DC Council to Support Harm Reduction Amendments in the Crimnibus and Remove Remaining Harmful Provisions!

Today the DC Council will vote on the Crimnibus aka “Secure DC” in their legislative meeting! This is the first of two votes. Because of public pressure (thanks to you all) some of the harmful provisions have been removed from Pinto’s latest version of the bill! Unfortunately, many of them still remain.

Email the DC Council urging them to:

SUPPORT the following amendments that mitigate some of the harm caused by the crimnibus bill:

  • Councilmembers Lewis-George and McDuffie’s amendment on DNA sampling and collection.
  • Councilmember Lewis-George’s amendment restoring the threshold for first degree theft.
  • Councilmember Lewis-George’s amendment that moves up the implementation of the Second Chance Act.
  • Potential amendments that will remove the pretrial detention expansion provisions, giving experts the time to analyze the effect of the current provisions implemented in 2023 through the Prioritizing Public Safety Emergency and Temporary Acts.

REJECT the harmful and ineffective provisions in the crimnibus that:

  • Expand surveillance, including those that revive old, ineffective, and racist practices, like drug-free zones and anti-mask laws, or broaden current surveillance practices, like expanding GPS monitoring, DNA collection, and camera subsidies.
  • Curtail transparency and oversight over MPD by allowing officers to review body-worn camera footage before writing reports.
  • Expand mandatory minimums, lengthen sentences, and change the Sentencing Commission.
  • Expand police power to enact violence, by making it easier for police to engage in deadly, high-speed car chases and creating loopholes to recriminalize fare evasion.
