Tell President Biden: Let's Go YOLO for Climate

*Jan 6 2025 Update* In his biggest #YOLOJoe Moment yet, President Biden is set to ban new offshore oil and gas drilling in most U.S. coastal waters — Today! Back up this latest decision by sending (or sending another) email to President Biden and your Congressional delegation.

No way to sugar-coat this: Joe Biden is leaving office on January 20, and things are going to get worse. But we have a plan to save what we can.

President Biden can make the biggest difference in the shortest amount of time if he:

  • President Biden must stop all new permits for liquefied natural gas terminals. He's already paused the LNG permit process, which is essential because each pending LNG export terminal — like CP2 — is a massive climate bomb. But Trump is going to want to speed up the permitting process. Biden and his DOE can order a stop to LNG export permits, and because these processes are inherently very slow moving, if Trump tries to shortcut settled law he’s going to get sued.
  • President Biden can use his broad powers under the Outer Continental Lands Act to withdraw offshore lands permanently from fossil fuel leasing.
  • President Biden can protect the Inflation Reduction Act and push out IRA funds for clean energy and more — as much of it as possible, as fast as possible.
  • And finally, because you only live (and get to be President) once (YOLO): Biden can issue executive orders to stop all kinds of pipelines and fossil fuels: Deny the Line 5 permit, undo the Dakota Access Pipeline, revoke Line 3's permits and end all fossil fuel subsidies. Let Trump explain, if he can, why these projects are actually good things.

Congress and the Senate, in particular, can help too! President Biden can nominate and the Senate needs to confirm more judges, not to mention appointments to the National Labor Relations Board, and other federal positions. Judicial appointments can’t be undone without extraordinary action in the Senate.
