Tell South Carolina Lawmakers: Reject the Healthcare Ban to Protect Trans Youth & Adults!
There's only a handful of days left in the legislative session, and lawmakers are prioritizing attacking trans youth and adults over doing their jobs to make South Carolina better for all of us. The Senate voted to pass the Anti-Trans Healthcare Bill on May 2nd, so now we need to stop the bill from moving forward in the House or it will go to Governor McMaster's desk to be signed into law. Young trans people deserve our acceptance and support, not hateful rhetoric and discriminatory laws that will force them to travel and navigate a complex legal landscape to get the care they need.
As a reminder, H. 4624 would:
1. Ban medically necessary care for all transgender youth in SC
2. Make life-saving healthcare more expensive and harder to access for many trans adults in SC (by interfering with what state-run insurance plans can cover)
3. Force teachers to out transgender youth to their parents, potentially before they are ready, putting young people with unsupportive parents in unsafe home environments.
Despite testimony against it from dozens of South Carolinians in January and February, the House and Senate have both moved forward with this bill, and now it's up for final conference in the House. The legislative session is over on May 9th, and if we can stop them from passing the bill before then, it will likely not be able to move forward until the next legislative session.
All trans people deserve our acceptance and support, not hateful rhetoric and discriminatory laws that will force them to travel and navigate a complex legal landscape to get the care they need.
Before the House votes on this bill, please rush a message to your lawmaker to stop H.4624 and protect trans healthcare in SC.
