Tell the Bay Area Housing Finance Authority: Electrify Affordable Housing Units!

Write a letter to the BAHFA oversight committee members and tell them to include in the bond language requiring all-electric units for Affordable Housing constructed, acquired, or rehabbed with public funds!

No public funds should be used to perpetuate natural gas in
Affordable Housing!

A Regional Housing Bond, covering all 9 Bay Area Counties, is scheduled for the Nov 2024 ballot. Currently BAHFA (Bay Area Housing Finance Authority) is working on the language and the size of this bond, estimated to be between $10B and $20B. The draft measure will be ready in Q1 of 2024.

The bond would include:
- 52% for new construction of affordable housing
- 15% for preservation of existing affordable units
- 20% flexible funds due to diversity of need in each locality
- 5% tenant protection (this item is aspirational since under current law, it is not a bondable expense.)

No public money should be used to provide or retain gas infrastructure in Affordable Housing! For the health and safety of our community, we must electrify all units - both new construction and existing, as well as newly acquired or already acquired.

Strides have been made in the Bay Area to pursue all-electric new construction as the standard, but recent ruling on the Berkeley ordinance banning new gas hookups may impact the implementation of these goals.

Write a letter to the BAHFA oversight committee members and tell them to include in the bond language requiring all-electric units for Affordable Housing constructed, acquired, or rehabbed with public funds!

Here are other actions you can take to join us in this campaign:

1) Call the representative in your area to set up a meeting to talk to them about not allowing public money to build new gas or maintain existing gas infrastructure in Affordable Housing. All these buildings must employ all electric heat pumps, and induction stoves, both for the health of the tenants and for the planet.

2. Get your organization to sign on to this letter - feel free to revise the template and make it your own! The most impactful letters include personal anecdotes about why you or your organization think this is important.

3. If you know any of the people or organizations on the advisory board, call or contact them and ask them to support our all-electric initiative!
