Tell the Senate: Investigate the bribery scandal between big oil and Donald Trump.
May 22 update: Senator Whitehouse and Representative Raskin are announcing next steps in their investigation into Big Oil today. They already teamed up on a hearing a few weeks ago that showed how the industry used collusion, deceit, and dirty dealing to delay, deny, and derail congressional action on climate change. Since then there’s been a damning order from the Federal Trade Commission that rocked the industry over claims that a Texas executive was colluding with OPEC to fix prices.
And last week, a bombshell Washington Post investigation revealed that Trump recently summoned fossil fuel executives to his mar a lago club, and suggested they pay him $1 billion. In exchange, Trump promised to roll back specific Biden Administration climate and fossil fuel regulations “on the first day.”
That kind of quid-pro-quo arrangement has a legal definition: Bribery.
Senate Budget Committee chair and climate hawk Sheldon Whitehouse seems to agree, telling reporters “This is practically an invitation to ask more questions.” But we need more than questions. We need an inquiry, with subpoenas and all the rest, to get to the bottom of Trump's bribery and the fossil fuel industry’s complicity.
