Tell the Senate to Approve Permanent Pay Fix for Federal Wildland Firefighters
15,000 Federal Wildland Firefighters (WFFs) from the U.S. Forest Service (USDA) and Department of the Interior (DOI) endure longer and more dangerous wildfire seasons each year, with the loss of life and property increasing at a phenomenal rate. A temporary WFF pay adjustment has expired, putting our federal WFFs at risk. Failing to act could mean that federal firefighters will endure a pay cut of up to 50% of base pay, up to $20,000.
We need you to contact your senators (you're in the right place for that, we've built a tool for you!) and let them know that you support a permanent pay fix for Federal WFFs in the next CR or emergency supplemental. The National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE) and Grassroots Wildland Firefighters have built this letter campaign to make it easy for you.
Our best chance of getting a pay fix passed is for Congress to include the base pay table featured in WFPPA and FY25 Budget in a Continuing Resolution as a policy rider. This could result in a permanent pay fix (yes, a CR is temporary, but Google “policy rider” for a civics lesson). There is no guarantee any of this will go through, but it’s our best chance at a permanent pay fix before the next Congress begins and we lose the progress we’ve made over the past 2 years.
