For years dark money has played an outsized role in Ohio judicial elections. Groups with ambiguous names such as “Ohioans for a Healthy Economy” and “Ohioans for Judicial Integrity” spent nearly $7 million on political advertisements in the 2024 Ohio Supreme Court election.

We deserve to know who is trying to influence our elections. These groups took great pains to make it hard to see who was really paying for ads, making it difficult for voters to figure out who the donors were, what motivated them, and what they wanted from the state’s highest court.  

Ohio desperately needs transparency and disclosure laws to shine a light on the dark money. Secret money can hide conflicts of interest and can obscure the influence of the wealthy on courts and other elected officials.

We must take action now! Tell your State Representatives and Senators to put forward legislation to create better disclosure laws and create greater transparency in Ohio elections. We should be able to follow the money and figure out exactly who is paying for political advertisements.
