Tell your Senators: Don't allow Trumps recess appointments

Even before taking office, Trump is signaling an unprecedented attempt to expand presidential power.

He has recently declared that the next Republican Senate leader “must agree to Recess Appointments,” allowing him to install key officials without the standard Senate confirmation process. This would eliminate the "advice and consent" role of the Senate, a fundamental check on executive power. Trump's preferred nominees are likely to be highly controversial—even potentially dividing members of his own base.

Reports suggest his team is exploring a plan to adjourn both Houses of Congress under Article II, Section 3 of the Constitution, enabling him to bypass the Senate entirely and use recess appointments to fill his Cabinet and other top positions.

No U.S. president has ever pursued such a tactic. This move would undermine the constitutional balance of powers by effectively sidestepping the Senate’s role in vetting and confirming high-level appointments. Our system was designed with this safeguard to ensure that individuals in critical positions receive thorough scrutiny.

This is a first step toward eroding the checks and balances that form the foundation of our democracy. We must stand against any attempt to dismantle these protections.
