Period poverty impacts menstruators right here in our state. In Connecticut, 1 in 8 menstruators between ages 12-44 lives below the federal poverty level (FPL). According to the 2020 United Way of Connecticut ALICE report, 38% of Connecticut families struggle to make ends meet.
Lawmakers in Connecticut have the opportunity to make strides toward ending period poverty in Connecticut this legislative session! Right now, the legislature is considering H.B. 5272: An Act Concerning Menstrual Products.
H.B. 5272 will provide menstrual products at no costs to individuals who need them in public schools, state colleges, universities and community colleges, prisons and jails, and shelters.
H.B. 5272 is supported by: Alliance for Period Supplies | Black and Brown United In Action | Center for Youth Leadership at Brien McMahon High School | Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence | Connecticut Women’s Education and Legal Fund (CWEALF) | The Diaper Bank of Connecticut | Dignity Grows | Jewish Federation Association of Connecticut | LiveGirl | Love Your Menses | Mayor’s Youth Leadership Council at the Stamford Youth Services Bureau | Naugatuck Parent Leadership Training Institute | Prochoice Connecticut | The National Diaper Bank Network | Unidad Latina en Acción | Women Against Mass Incarceration CT
