Transgender youth

Rep. Ron Hood and Rep. Bill Dean are introducing a bill to ban therapy for transgender youth. Under this bill, physicians could be charged with a third-degree felony for attempting therapeutic or surgical procedures intended to alter the gender of someone under the age of 18.

Surgical procedures are very rare under 18, however, reversible medical therapies can be used to help young people struggling with gender dysphoria.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta found that about 1.8% of high school students identify as transgender and 34% of transgender youth have attempted suicide in the past year.

A survey of more than 20,000 transgender adults found that those who underwent gender-related medical treatments as teens were less likely to have suicidal thoughts.
