URGENT ACTION to Demand Affordable Housing at 5WTC
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation (LMDC) has announced that it is going forward with the proposed plan with a minimal number of affordable units. This is public land that is being used to help private corporations maximize their profits instead of providing desperately needed affordable housing. We need to let them know that we will not stand for this.
Comments to the LMDC are due by THIS MONDAY, MAY 15, AT NOON.
The proposed plan allows developers to build 900 luxury units on public land in a neighborhood that is already saturated with luxury apartments.
As we have heard so many politicians say, every neighborhood should do their part to help bring affordable housing back to our city. This is a high opportunity area with excellent schools, gorgeous parks, a public transportation hub and a walk away from jobs on Wall Street and the Civic Center.
All our local elected officials, including US Rep. Dan Goldman, State Senator Brian Kavanaugh, Assembly Member Charles Fall, Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine and City Council Member Christopher Marte have objected to the LMDC's proposal. You can see their press release here.
The community has fought for over two decades to build deeply affordable housing that would promote diversity and give 9/11 survivors & first responders a home in the neighborhood they rebuilt. This is a high opportunity area with excellent schools, gorgeous parks, a public transportation hub and a walk away from jobs on Wall Street and the Civic Center.
The LMDC promised affordable housing downtown. They must deliver.
