Vote NO on SAVE Act
Introduced by Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), the SAVE Act would amend the National Voter Registration Act to require documentary proof of U.S. citizenship—such as a passport, birth certificate, or military ID—before individuals can register to vote in federal elections. While framed as a measure to safeguard elections, this bill would disenfranchise countless eligible voters, particularly:
· Low-income individuals
· People of color
· Naturalized citizens
· Individuals who face barriers to obtaining the necessary documentation due to financial or administrative challenges
The National Council of Churches believes voting is a sacred right and moral responsibility. Policies that restrict access to the ballot—especially those that target vulnerable communities—undermine the core tenets of our faith and democracy.
