VOTE Yes for S.3214 – Counselors Not Criminalization in Schools Act

Across the country it is necessary that we break the cycle of the school-to-prison pipeline and create inclusive learning environments where every child can thrive. The Counselors Not Criminalization in Schools Act will ensure that lawmakers and schools officials redirect resources toward proactive and compassionate interventions as a first resort to helping the country’s youth.
Our schools should be places where every student feels supported, valued, and empowered to thrive. Unfortunately, the current disciplinary approach in many educational institutions often leads to the criminalization of minor infractions, disproportionately impacting marginalized students, including Black, Indigenous, Latino, and LGBTQ+ youth, as well as those young persons with disabilities. In addition, studies have shown that even young Black girls receive harsher punishments and more suspensions than other girls in school.
