YES to Backyard Cottages and In-Law Apartments - ADUS - HB1660

UPDATE: Sadly, the Washington State legislature failed to pass two important housing bills this session -- the ADU reform bill (HB1660) and the middle housing zoning reform bill (HB1782). We'll continue to build coalition support this year and come back bigger and stronger in 2023. Please go to www.homes4wa.org to sign up for updates and ways to get involved.

Let your Washington state Senator know you support ADU homes and you want them to pass a strong ADU bill this session!

Washington state legislators have a chance this session to act on housing affordability in a meaningful way. Housing costs, homelessness, and the cost of living are top concerns for WA voters. Legislators can act to lift unnecessary restrictions on an affordable, convenient type of housing that are in place in many cities across the state -- but the session clock is running out.

Please take a moment today to urge your senator to push for a floor vote before the 5 PM Friday cut off and to keep the bill strong.

The bill is strong but weakening amendments have been proposed. Senators need to hear from us --  now -- that we want to push for a vote on ADUs this year, and we want to keep the bill strong.

Here’s what it does:

  • Legalizes 2 ADUs per lot
  • Lifts renter bans (but allows them if the ADU is used for short-term rental)
  • Legalizes separate sale of ADUs
  • Sets moderate caps on minimum lot size and maximum ADU size
  • Supersedes HOAs

ADUs help affordability in two main ways: 1) More homes in existing neighborhoods; 2) affordable, modest-sized homes.
