Petition: A Rhode Island That Works For All, Not Just the Wealthy

Rhode Island State Representatives and State Senators

Rhode Island families are feeling the squeeze from rising costs, while federal budget cuts threaten our schools, healthcare, and infrastructure. Meanwhile, the wealthiest among us continue to profit off of working families’ pain, benefiting disproportionately from a tax system that favors the top 1%, not the working people who create value in our state.

Working Families Power is backing three straightforward reforms:

  • Increase taxes on the top 1% of income earners
H5473 (Rep. Alzate), S0329 (Sen. Murray)

  • Add a property tax on non-owner occupied second homes valued over $1 million ("Taylor Swift Tax")
H5752 (Rep. Ajello), S0437 (Sen. Kallman)

  • Create a modest 1% wealth tax on fortunes exceeding $25 million
    forthcoming (Rep. Potter)

These changes would generate the revenue we need to protect essential services that benefit everyone in our state. From improving the quality of public education, to expanding public transportation, to ensuring that every Rhode Islander is housed and has access to crucial medical services—it all depends on the revenue that our state is able to generate. We are calling on Rhode Island elected officials to make the brave and necessary choice to ask our state’s wealthiest residents to pay their fair share to help raise this revenue.

By signing, you join Rhode Islanders from all backgrounds who believe in shared prosperity. Together, we can build a tax system that works for all of us, not just those at the top.

PETITION FOR REFORMS TO TAX THE RICH IN RHODE ISLAND

We, the undersigned Rhode Island residents, call for tax reform that ensures everyone contributes their fair share.

Working families across our state struggle with rising costs while facing cuts to critical programs. At the same time, our current tax system allows the wealthiest Rhode Islanders to pay far less, percentage-wise, than middle- and working-class residents.

We petition the Rhode Island General Assembly and Governor to enact legislation that:

• Establishes a new tax bracket for the top 1% of income earners — H5473 (Rep. Alzate), S0329 (Sen. Murray)

• Creates a supplemental property tax on non-primary residences valued over $1 million — H5752 (Rep. Ajello), S0437 (Sen. Kallman)

• Implements a 1% annual tax on net wealth exceeding $25 million — forthcoming (Rep. Potter)

• Directs resulting revenues to public education, healthcare, transportation infrastructure, and essential social services

These measures represent a fair approach to building an economy that works for all Rhode Island residents. We urge prompt consideration and passage of these reforms.

Respectfully submitted,
