#MeloDontGentrify Crown Heights

Carmelo Anthony

New York Knicks player, Carmelo Anthony, is contributing funding toward the development of the Bedford-Union Armory in Crown Heights. As it stands, this development is a bad deal that will will further exacerbate the gentrification of Crown Heights. That's why we are calling on Carmelo Anthony to remove his name from the Bedford-Union Armory development.

The project has been given to developers Slate and BFC partners, who are known for building units that are out-of-sync with the median income of the residents.

Slate, a luxury housing developer is also the developer involved in the recent Rivington House nursing-home scandal. After coordinating with the buyer to remove the deed protecting the development, Slate bought the Rivington House nursing home for $116 million. Slate is now in the process of transforming the nursing-home into luxury condos. Meanwhile, BFC Partners disguises as an ‘affordable’ housing developer while fueling gentrification at every turn, building housing that largely doesn't match the need of the local community.

Together Slate and BFC are changing neighborhoods across Brooklyn, and Crown Heights is their next target.

The Bedford Armory is public land which has the potential of creating badly needed affordable housing for Brooklyn families who are rent burdened, or for the Crown Heights residents who have already been displaced due to rising rents. Yet the Bedford Armory development includes little-to no apartments that are actually affordable for local residents.

Carmelo Anthony, who was born in Brooklyn, is known to give back to low-income communities, and has used his celebrity status to bring attention to the horrors of police brutality. This development is bad for Crown Heights, and bad for Brooklyn. That's why we're calling on Carmelo to do the right thing and remove his support.

Sign the petition to call on Carmelo Anthony to stand with Brooklyn families over the interests of gentrifyng developers, and remove his name from the development of the Bedford-Union Armory.

Dear Carmelo Anthony

I’m signing this petition to ask that you please drop your backing of the Bedford-Union Armory Development.

I understand that your engagement with the project centers around a future recreational facility in hopes that this will be a great asset for the local community. But it will not.

Brooklyn is in desperate need of affordable housing. Unfortunately, the Bedford Armory development includes little-to-no apartments that are actually affordable for families currently living in the neighborhood.

Developers Slate Properties and BFC have a history of actively fueling and profiting off of the gentrification of Brooklyn. As it stands, this development will further exacerbate the gentrification of Crown Heights.

You are someone who has used your celebrity status to give back to low-income communities, and have bravely spoken out against systemic injustice in the past. That’s why I’m asking you to stand with Brooklyn families over gentrifying developers and please remove your name from this project.
