ADD YOUR NAME: Call on the DEA to remove marijuana from Schedule 1
Drug Enforcement Agency
Today, twenty-five states, including New Jersey, have legalized medical marijuana, allowing patients living with pain to have a more comfortable life. The majority of Americans even support decriminalization.
But the federal government hasn’t caught up. Marijuana remains a Schedule I controlled substance, illegal under federal law and, in some cases, carrying the same sentencing weight of violent crimes.

Marijuana laws in this country are confusing, conflicting, and terribly outdated. In some cases, when patients are forbidden access to treatment and forced to live in pain, they are inhumane. And like many of our laws targeting nonviolent offenders, people of color are disproportionately affected by harsh sentencing guidelines.
If a doctor believes marijuana will help a patient living in pain achieve a better quality of life, shouldn’t that be enough? We need to remove marijuana from Schedule 1 of the Controlled Substances Act once and for all to offer clarity and consistency to the laws across the country and to help those who need it most.
