Add your name: Help ban bump stocks

the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF)

On Oct. 1, 2017, a shooter attacked a large crowd attending a country music concert in Las Vegas. By attaching bump stock accessories to his rifles, he effectively converted them into machine guns. He fired over one thousand rounds of ammunition in minutes, killing 58 people and injuring more than 700.

Bump stocks turn a semi-automatic weapon into a machine gun. Under current federal law, automatic weapons are highly regulated but bump stocks are not — anyone can buy one.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) has asked for the public to weigh in on a proposed rule clarifying federal law and regulating bump stocks — a rule that would make it clear that these devices are illegal.

Daily Kos is working with a wide coalition to let the ATF know that it's critical to put this rule in place – and finally regulate these dangerous firearm accessories. Please add your name today and we will submit the petition before the comment period ends on June 27th.

After you sign the petition, you will be redirected to the ATF comment page. Feel free to write another, personalized comment. We can be sure that the NRA and their allies are also submitting comments. Help us make sure our good sense breaks through their nonsense.

Here are some tools you can use when submitting your personalized comment:
  • Clearly express you support the proposed rule.
  • The comment does not need to be longer than 2-3 sentences.
  • Should explain why you think bump stocks should be regulated and the benefit to your community in making bump stocks illegal.
  • If you need to look up the proposed rule, its formal title is ATF-2018-002.

Bump stocks and other so-called "conversion devices" exploit a gap in federal law. ATF should act quickly to make clear that bump stocks are illegal because they enable shooters to transform their guns into automatic weapons. These devices have an especially deadly effect, and this rule would have an immeasurable public safety benefit.
