Congress

Just over a year after the Surgeon General issued an advisory on the harmful effects of Social Media, he re-upped his involvement in the fight for responsible tech by calling for warning labels on social media platforms. As young people and parents navigate the online environment on their own, “they are pitted against some of the best product engineers and most well-resourced companies in the world,” and are up against such dire harms, that it is necessary to send a warning that social media has not been proven to be safe.

In absence of meaningful congressional victories to date, this call for warning labels makes the urgency clear. It tells companies that, as we hold them to account to design safer products, we must take such drastic measures to create a buffer between teens and the harms that social media is known to cause. This does not absolve tech from such responsibility, but rather ratchets up the caution teens and parents should have towards a product that is proven to be unsafe as much as tobacco, alcohol, and not using a seatbelt. As we keep up the fight for long term reform, join us and the Surgeon General of the United States in demanding Congress require this small change from Big Tech companies to protect teens across the country.

I support the recommendation of the U.S. Surgeon General that social media platforms be required to carry warning labels.

The documented mental health harms to our teenagers are widespread, significant, and proven by multiple independent studies. We cannot ignore the evidence any longer.

The kids AREN’T alright, and Big Tech will continue to ensnare and addict our kids until we take steps to stop them. The ball is in your court and I urge you to take action immediately.
