Add your name: Urge congressional Republicans to push for refugee resettlement increases

Sen. Lindsey Graham, Sen. John Cornyn, Rep. Jim Jordan, & Rep. Ken Buck

As part of an annual process required by law, the Trump administration is considering how many refugees can be resettled to the U.S. in Fiscal Year 2021. On September 10, 2020, disturbing new reports show the Trump administration is considering delaying setting the admissions goal and/or further cutting the admissions goal from the already historic low of 18,000 people.

The administration has already cut refugee admissions by more than 80%, from the historic average goal of 95,000 to just 18,000 this fiscal year – with only 9,500 people being resettled this fiscal year. And on October 1, 2020, the Trump administration announced that they would again lower Fiscal Year 2021 resettlement goals to 15,000 people, a more than 80% cut over historic norms. This is just Trump’s latest demonstration of flagrant xenophobia and racism against Black and Brown immigrants and refugees.

By September 30, Trump is required to consult with leaders of the House and Senate Judiciary Committees before setting next year’s refugee admissions goal. And we know that the four Republican members in Judiciary leadership — Sen. Lindsey Graham (SC) and John Cornyn (TX) and Reps. Jim Jordan (OH-04) and Ken Buck (CO-04) — have direct lines to Trump and are key to ensuring refugees are able to safely resettle in the U.S.

It is up to us to send a strong message to Republican leadership on Capitol Hill that we are watching and demand they block Trump’s plans to systematically decrease refugee admission into the U.S.

Sign the petition to Republican Judiciary leadership: We demand you support refugee communities and thwart Trump’s efforts to severely reduce refugee admission.

Refugees are members of your communities and are your constituents. Our country has a long history of resettling refugees so that they may rebuild new lives in safer conditions. We are headed down a dangerous path if we exclude refugees from the U.S. Be on the right side of history and push Trump to increase next year’s refugee admission goal.
