You have 16 days. 16 days to accomplish something historic and necessary for Minnesota’s children. Big Tech companies have failed to self-regulate for too long while making empty promises to protect kids online. Our kids are the victims of their failure, suffering harm after devastating harm. And now, after two years of consideration, you, our elected representatives, have days left to pass the Kids Code’s landmark protections into law and ensure no more Minnesota children are harmed at the hands of Big Tech.

The Minnesota Kids Code is a framework that works. It mandates safety and privacy by design wherever kids learn, grow, and play – from social media to gaming to AI. The same companies fighting to kill the Kids Code in Minnesota have complied with similar legislation elsewhere by introducing dozens of safer product features and improved data privacy protections. Why don’t Minnesota’s kids deserve the same fundamental protections?

Our coalition has repeatedly asked to meet with the trade group representing Snap, Google, Amazon, Meta, and TikTok, the most powerful companies responsible for severe harms to our kids, to ask them to support a proven framework and to work with us on improvements. They have refused, and they are blocking progress. Tech should not call the shots.

Too many of our youngest community members have been harmed online. Kids continue to be profiled, stalked, trafficked, and tragically lost due to irresponsible tech design and a lack of essential guardrails. The evidence is clear: we cannot trust Big Tech to keep kids safe online on their own accord. You have mere weeks left to make this right.

Choose our young people’s futures over tech companies’ empty words. Pass the Minnesota Kids Code. We don’t have time to wait.
