Addison Lee CEO Liam Griffin: Value Your Drivers and Save our Company

Addison Lee

Addison Lee drivers are coming together to urge Liam Griffin to save this company by making driving a valued and rewarding job again. Although Addison Lee’s finances are booming, drivers pay and conditions are declining. This is forcing drivers out of the company and losing us clients. As the people on the road doing the work that keeps this company going, we are the heart of this business. We demand to be listened to.

Hi Liam,

Thank you for your recent update in which you proudly explained to us how well business is going at the moment for Addison Lee. Revenue growth of over 30% to £218.5 million and an adjusted EBITDA that has more than doubled to £19.1 million are numbers that we should all be proud of, especially the drivers who are largely responsible for these figures.

These impressive numbers show a business emerging strongly from the pandemic but the reality for drivers is very different. Over the last two years you have made various changes to the business and with every change that has taken place, drivers have been negatively impacted. From the abandoning of credit card jobs, the changing of how cancellations are now paid, the increase in rental fees to the latest new “deal”, it seems that despite our hard work, drivers' earnings continue to decline.

The result of these negative changes has meant that drivers are really struggling to keep working for the company and many have been forced to leave after years of working for Addison Lee.

It is not just the drivers who are struggling- clients are suffering too. In your most recent financial reports you cite that a lack of drivers has led to Addison Lee having to turn down business. As drivers who care deeply about the long term success of the company it is saddening to hear this and this is made even worse when the solution to this issue is right in front of your eyes Liam - give your current loyal group of drivers the pay and respect they deserve and they will continue to look after the business for you.

Many of us drivers have worked for Addison Lee for over a decade and are very proud to have contributed to building this company into what it is today. This job has helped us build a life outside of work, fed our families and paid our bills. We have travelled thousands of miles for Addison Lee, worked thousands of hours for Addison Lee and carried thousands of passengers for Addison Lee. This loyalty from your drivers is what makes the company unique, sets it apart from others, and makes it a premium customer offering. We know this business inside out and not only deserve to be consulted when decisions are made that affect our livelihoods, but also do not deserve to be mistreated for our service. Every driver- whether they are company car drivers or owner drivers- should be able to make a dignified wage working for Addison Lee and not be forced to endure such precarious working conditions.

We are worried about the direction the business is going in because despite the positive numbers, drivers are being forced to leave and clients will soon do the same. We have come together as a group of drivers to ask that you stop finding ways to cut our pay, restrict our earnings and recognise what we have contributed to the business by improving our current pay and conditions and consulting with us as a union before any more changes are made.

In your own words drivers are your “most valuable asset” at Addison Lee. It’s time you started treating us that way.
