Adopt Vision Zero and 20mph for safe and healthy travel

Every death and serious injury on the road is a preventable tragedy and yet, on average, five people die every day on the road in the UK and 80 are seriously injured (10-year average from 2014-2023). Shockingly, there has been little change in the number of people killed and injured on our roads in the last decade.

We support the 'Brake' road safety charity's vision to call for a Vision Zero approach to road safety management based on the belief that no death or serious injury is acceptable on roads.

It follows the principles of the Safe System, where the five pillars of the road environment work together to minimise risk:

1. Safe roads

2. Safe Speeds

3. Safe Vehicles

4. Safe road use

5. Post-crash care

We also want 20mph in residential areas to reduce collisions and encourage people to walk, wheel or cycle. Lower speed limits decrease road noise, improve air quality and promote healthier lifestyles that benefit everyone, including children, the elderly, and those with disabilities.

We call for the adoption of Vision Zero and the five pillars of the Safe System, that no one should be killed or seriously injured on our roads.

We also ask for a 20mph speed limit on residential roads to make streets safer for walking, wheeling and cycling and to reduce the risk of being hurt by a vehicle.
