One of the nation’s most popular and effective programs, Social Security provides a foundation of income on which workers can build for their retirement, as well as valuable social insurance protection both to workers who become disabled and to families whose breadwinner dies. Beneficiaries earn their Social Security benefits by working and paying Social Security payroll-tax contributions.

But President Trump’s plans to cut payroll taxes would guarantee cuts to Social Security benefits. Those cuts would put the retirement of millions of Americans — Americans who have paid for their benefits — at risk. We cannot afford to risk putting future generations of seniors into poverty or hurt the Americans who rely on Social Security.
