An Open Letter in Support of Tufts' Part-time Faculty
Tufts University Administration
At Tufts and across the nation, adjunct faculty – a vital part of the academic community – are placed in a separate and distinctly second-class category compared to other faculty. But they are coming together to build a movement for respect, equitable pay, and a fair and secure contract.
This month, Tufts University’s part-time lecturers are beginning negotiations with university officials on their first union contract. Please sign your name in support of our vision for Tufts.

As Tufts alums, we are proud of our school’s dedication to excellent teaching. We value the teachers who challenged us in their classes, and we support the efforts of the part-time faculty to gain fair and respectful treatment as essential members of our academic community.
Classes taught by part-time faculty were central to our education at Tufts, from the close-up seminars in first-year writing and language instruction to courses taught by experts in their fields across the undergraduate curriculum. Often, it was a part-time faculty member who guided us through particular challenges in our college experience, and we continue to turn to these mentors for counsel and recommendations because we feel they truly got to know us.
We believe that part-time faculty should not be treated as second-class citizens and urge the administration to honor the university’s core values in negotiating with them.
