Ask Cambridge City Council candidates to support safe infrastructure for everyone who uses our streets

Cambridge City Council candidates

The Cambridge City Council voted to delay separated bike lanes by an additional 18 months, despite major public outcry. Major connections including Cambridge St, Broadway, and Main St will not be required to be completed until over 3.5 years from now in November 2027.

We believe that everyone should be able to travel safely and comfortably, regardless of their mode of transportation. We ask all City Council candidates to support initiatives to improve road safety, promote environmental sustainability, and advance social justice in our community:

1. Complete the separated bike network: Commit to completing a core, connected network of separated bike lanes across Cambridge, by signing Cambridge Bicycle Safety’s election pledge (https://www.cambridgebikesafety.org/election/). In addition to safety for existing riders, this will make biking, which is an extraordinarily affordable and sustainable mode of transportation, accessible to far more people.

2. Improve pedestrian safety: Enhance crosswalk visibility and add new crosswalks and signals to ensure pedestrians of all ages and abilities can cross streets safely and comfortably.

3. Implement traffic calming measures: Reduce dangerous speeding and turning on our neighborhood streets with proven methods such as raised crosswalks, neighborhood traffic circles, and chicanes.

4. Promote transportation equity and environmental justice: Ensure that transportation investments and programs benefit everyone; being able to afford a car should not be a requirement for living, working, or studying in our city.

Please prioritize this critical work to reduce traffic deaths and injuries by promoting safer, more sustainable, and equitable transportation in Cambridge.
