Ban the Sale of Single Use Plastic Bottles @ Portland Community College

President Mark Mitsui

Portland Community College is a leader in Sustainability. They are ranked #1 in the Country by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. However, they continue to persist with antiquated methodology that purchases and pushes plastic pollution on the student population.

Now is the time for change. The College has a 10 year long Pouring Rights Contract with Coca-Cola that is set to expire this year! It is integral students are offered a seat at the table and we demand language in the new contract that eliminates plastic waste.

Join us in urging College Administrators to Ban the Sale of Single Use Plastic Bottles!

I support a ban on the sale of single use plastic bottles for Portland Community College. Plastic pollution primarily impacts impoverished areas in the form of landfills systematically placed near communities of color and low income neighborhoods. We must work together to fight environmental racism and environmental degradation. Portland Community College should work to accomplish their goals as outlined in the YESS initiative by promoting public health instead of inadvertently diminishing it.

Portland Community College has a commitment through the 2011 Rules of Procurement to purchase healthy and sustainable options. Legislation like the Green New Deal, and Portland's Resolution to Reduce Plastics, show that there is growing support and action around sustainability initiatives. Portland Community College must include language in the 2019 Pouring Rights Contract to ban the sale and distribution of single use plastic bottles.

I urge you to be a leader of such policies and practices by supporting a ban on the sale of single use plastic bottles throughout Portland Community College.

Thank you.
