SIGN NOW: DEMAND AG BARR AND SEC. POMPEO RECUSE THEMSELVES FROM THE IMPEACHMENT INQUIRY

Attorney General Bill Barr and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo

Administration officials may be involved in what clearly appears to be a quid pro quo -- freezing hundreds of millions of dollars in military aid until the Ukrainian president agrees to investigate Trump’s political rival -- former Vice President Joe Biden. These same officials should not be making decisions about what materials and testimony are provided to Congress during the ongoing impeachment inquiry.

Join Open the Government in demanding a transparent process that allows Congress to perform its essential oversight role while preventing the Trump administration from stonewalling Congress.

As administration officials involved with President Trump’s dealings with the president of Ukraine, we call on you to recuse yourselves from any decisions about what testimony or documents are provided to Congress during the impeachment inquiry of the president. Attorney General Barr was specifically mentioned in the whistleblower’s report, and Sec. of State Pompeo acknowledged he was on the phone call with Trump and the president of Ukraine. As a result, neither of you should be part of any decisions over what material is provided to Congress.

Our democracy requires transparency, congressional oversight and checks and balances. In order for congressional oversight to function effectively, cabinet secretaries involved in any matter being investigated must recuse themselves. Faith in our democratic institutions depends on it.
