Basic Needs Navigators

Oregon Leaders

No one should be hungry or homeless when we have more than enough food and housing for everyone. This is especially true after COVID-19 and the wildfires have put even more of our neighbors at risk.

Poverty isn’t exclusive to any one community, college campuses are not immune. Student food insecurity has become a topic of growing concern on campuses in the past five years.

A nationwide study by NSCAHH and the Student PIRGs in 2016 surveyed students at 34 colleges and found that 48% of respondents reported being food insecure, including 22% with very low levels of food security that qualified them as hungry.

I support on-campus Basic Need Navigators who will connect students with resources. Dedicated and trained staff on each Oregon campus could make the difference between a student getting enough to eat or having a safe place to sleep at night.

No one should be hungry or homeless when we have more than enough food and housing for everyone. College students can do their part by volunteering their time to fundraise and provide direct service. This is especially true after COVID-19 and the wildfires have put even more of our neighbors at risk.
