LOCKDOWN Leon to stop exponential COVID spread

City and County Commissions

Dear Commissioners,

Urgent action is needed NOW to slow the spread of COVID-19. We are experiencing uncontrolled, exponential growth. The only solution is a temporary lockdown of 7-14 days, and rolling back to Phase 1 of reopening.

Leon County added over 1000 positive cases in the last ten days, with 700 of them in the last week. We also know that testing is bottle necked and testing sites are full or booked out for days.

Last week, we experienced several days (once Patients First antigen testing was incorporated into official numbers) of 12-17% positive rates. These numbers are remaining steady between 8-13% in the last week, and clearly trending upward.

Our hospitals are getting slammed. Contrary to state numbers, as of today there are:

26 hospitalized COVID confirmed at CRMC
22 hospitalized COVID probable at CRMC
22 hospitalized COVID confirmed at TMH

Most of these were added in the last 7 days. 14 days ago, we had five (5) total hospitalizations.

We must lockdown now.

LCS is getting ready to reopen. We currently have an epidemic of cases in younger teens and college aged students. They will infect their teachers, who will then infect their families. Many of our teachers are in high risk groups. Some will get sick, or die.

According to the Columbia University model, which has been accurate so far, Florida will see up to 75,000 new daily infections by August 1st.

Dr. Scott Gottlieb, former FDA commissioner, claims 50% of people in the south will get it by the end of the year without drastic action. Using a 0.7% death rate, that is 1000 souls in Leon County.

The time to act is now.
