Biden, End Immigrant Family Detention & Separation, End All Immigrant Detention & Deportations

Cristobal Alex, Senior Advisor to transition team, & Alejandro Mayorkas

For the last four years the United States of America has seen unprecedented levels of terror, abuse and violence inflicted on the immigrant and refugee community. With the Trump administration coming to an end, ICE has escalated its abuse on immigrant communities, especially on Black immigrants, an escalation that has gone nearly unnoticed on the national level. That is why the nation needs the Biden administration to dismantle the deportation machine, by not only ending family detention in Pennsylvania and Texas, but also ending family separation, all immigrant detention and stopping all deportations.

However, the US immigration system has been targeting and abusing immigrants for decades. The actions by ICE are not new to this administration; however, the escalation is particularly inhumane under the current President. ICE has been hastily deporting individuals and whole families in what advocates are now calling Death Flights. It is time to dismantle ICE.

ICE is an agency that regularly and consistently acts with impunity and utter disregard to human rights. With this administration coming to an end, ICE has escalated its abuse on immigrant communities even further, as we have seen with the more than 500 children missing due to family separation and the forced hysterectomies at ICE detention facilities.

As reported COVID-19 cases in immigrant detention continue to grow, public health experts have explicitly stated that jails, prisons and detention centers are cramped and unsanitary places where people are routinely denied healthcare, and we as a nation have already witnessed the dire results. Immigrant prisons like the Berks County Detention Center already have a long history of medical neglect and outbreaks, in addition to detention itself being physically and mentally harmful, especially to children.

Beginning in July of 2020, ICE resumed bringing new families into the family prison system, thus increasing the chance of spreading COVID, like six employees testing positive at the Berks County Detention Center beginning in October and families testing positive in the Karnes Detention Center. Continued deportations will only continue the spread of COVID abroad and at home.

That is why the Biden administration must not only reverse the horror that has been unleashed from the Trump administration but must ultimately dismantle the deportation machine, by ending family detention and separation, and ending all immigrant detention and deportations.
