Bridgeway Safety: I Support Bike Lanes and Crosswalks
Sausalito City Council
The time has come to finally fix this iconic section of Bridgeway in Sausalito.
Bridgeway in Sausalito is a chaotic mix of cars, trucks, bikes and pedestrians. The median creates unsafe conditions. Slow bikes ride in the traffic lane and impatient drivers frequently speed around them. Experienced cyclists tangle with slow cars and bikes. Delivery trucks parked in the median block emergency vehicles. A lack of crosswalks and speeding cars make crossing dangerous. A recent Safety Study again confirmed these issues. What can we do about it?
Installing bike lanes and crosswalks will make the street safer for everyone. Slower bikes get out of the way of cars. Removing the median makes speeding harder. Moving loading out of the median opens space for emergency vehicles. Crosswalks and slower traffic make it safer for pedestrians. A grant will pay for it, fixing a roadway rated in the bottom 10% of roads in town.

Why hasn't this happened already?
Bike lanes were first proposed for this section in 1995 and there have been many attempts to deliver on improvements. However, there is a vocal group of residents who strongly oppose making any changes. They think removing the de facto median will impede fire trucks and slow emergency response. Some also oppose giving space on the road to bikes.
The Safety Study showed the current de facto median loading zone blocks emergency access, and giving space to bikes helps emergency vehicles and drivers by moving slow bikes out of the way.
How can we make this a reality?
If you want to see this happen, you must make your voice heard.
SIGN THE PETITION!
Change happens when the Sausalito City Council sees support from residents, and right now they mainly hear from the opponents.
There is a public hearing scheduled for Saturday, Feb 22 at 2PM.
The Sausalito City Council MUST HEAR FROM YOU AT THE RIGHT TIME! When you sign the petition, we will update you when the critical meetings happen, and give you instructions on how to make your voice heard. Without support at the meetings, the loud NO voices will shout these modest common sense changes down.
WITHOUT STRONG LOCAL SUPPORT, BIKE LANES AND SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS WILL NOT WILL NOT HAPPEN!

Bridgeway Boulevard between Princess and Richardson in Sausalito is more than just a street. It is one of the most iconic public open spaces in the entire Bay Area. It is also the “only practical north-south route for cyclists, including residents and visitors.”

We support the Bridgeway Safety and Improvement Plan unanimously recommended by the Sausalito Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee at its December 9, 2024 public meeting. Please adopt the plan and move rapidly forward with project implementation in order to provide safer and more enjoyable pedestrian and bicycle facilities and improved operating conditions for all users of this important corridor.
